The firm assisted in planning a new home for the collections of the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs in the new Rafael Moneo designed Chace Center. Objects housed in appropriate flat files, frames and storage boxes were easily accessible for inspection and were documented by excellent records with appropriate information for calculating storage equipment needs assessment. As lighting, HVAC, fire suppression, and fire detection systems selections had been made, the firm concentrated its efforts on the design, selection and layout of storage equipment. Size of objects and frequency of access were key factors in determining the layout of the mobile/compact storage equipment. Existing flat files were reused. Floor supported pull-out painting screens were selected based on the structural capacity of the room floor. Angle supports rather than shelves were selected for units storing solander boxes to maximize space and reduce cost. The firm prepared design drawings and a technical specification for competitive bidding of the storage equipment, achieving substantial savings over proposals originally received from storage equipment vendors.
